A classic Manang to Tilicho Lake trek
diverts from the Annapurna Circuit, typically involving a jeep ride to Manang (or Chame), an acclimatization day, then hiking to Khangsar Village, onwards to Tilicho Base Camp (TBC), a pre-dawn hike to Tilicho Lake (4919m), and returning to rejoin the main circuit or head back, often via Yak Kharka/Thorong Phedi towards Jomsom, blending adventure with stunning Himalayan views, but requires physical fitness and acclimatization.Â
Typical Itinerary (Manang to Tilicho & Return)
- Day 1: Drive to Manang/Chame: Start from Pokhara/Kathmandu, drive to Besisahar, then take a jeep to Chame or Manang (adjusting for acclimatization).
- Day 2: Acclimatization in Manang: Explore Manang, visit Braga Monastery, or hike to Ice Lake for better acclimatization.
- Day 3: Manang to Khangsar (3734m): Trek west from Manang, passing through old villages like Braga, towards Khangsar.
- Day 4: Khangsar to Tilicho Base Camp (4140m): A significant climb with views of Tilicho Peak, crossing ridges to reach TBC (or Shree Kharka).
- Day 5: Tilicho Lake & Return to TBC/Shree Kharka: An early morning (pre-dawn) hike (3-4 hrs round trip) to the stunning Tilicho Lake (4919m), then back to TBC/Shree Kharka.
- Day 6: TBC/Shree Kharka to Yak Kharka/Manang: Trek back down, possibly to Yak Kharka or further towards the main circuit.
- Day 7/8: Return Journey: Continue trekking down the circuit or catch a jeep back to Besisahar/Pokhara.Â
Key Considerations
- Acclimatization: Crucial for high altitude; take rest days in Manang.
- Trail Conditions: Can be challenging with landslides; best to go with an agency for safety.
- Best Time: Spring (March-May) and Autumn (Sept-Nov).
- Physical Fitness: Essential due to altitude and tough terrain.
- Options: Can be integrated into the full Annapurna Circuit or done as a shorter side trip.Â
